Day 8 – Ayam Beirut Al Cinema’iya 7

Day 8 | September 23rd

Day 8 of Ayam Beirut Al Cinema’iya will start at 11AM, with the first Master Class with Ghassan Salhab and Tariq Teguia at IESAV-USJ (registration period over!).

Screenings start at 6PM in Metropolis Empire Sofil, Achrafieh with Port of Memory by Kamal Aljaafari, Son of Babylon by Mohamed Al-Daradji and Inland by Tariq Teguia.

• Port of Memory In what is left of the city of Jaffa, a man about to lose his house contemplates his fate. Meanwhile, two women remain tied to their homes. One finds comfort feeding her old mother, until her house is taken over by an Israeli film crew. The other immerses herself in dreams of love whilst making wedding decorations. In a nearby café, an old captain sits motionless the whole day, while a man moves restless like a fish in an aquarium. For these Palestinians, this is a way of life, holding onto hope through their own rituals.

• Son of Babylon Northern Iraq, 2003. Two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Ahmed, a 12-year-old boy begrudgingly follows in the shadow of his grandmother. Upon hearing news that prisoners of war have been found alive in the South, she is determined to discover the fate of her missing son, Ahmed’s father, who never returned from the Gulf war 1991. From the mountains of north to the sands of Babylon in the south, they hitch rides from strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims, on all too similar journeys.

• Inland At the insistence of his friend Lakhdar, topographer Malek accepts a job in a base camp in Western Algeria, decimated by fundamentalists. He begins the first topographical readings, surveys the surrounding area and measures distances. During the night, his sleep is disturbed by powerful explosions. Coming back to the base-camp the following day, Malek discovers a young African woman hiding in a corner of his hut. When Lakhdar arrives to the site, both she and Malek have disappeared.

Master Class with filmmakers Ghassan Salhab* and Tariq Teguia**

 Topography of a film or the missing city

 Starting from the notions of border, boundary, edge, demarcation line, pit, point of disappearance and distance, Ghassan Salhab and Tariq Teguia question what we can still film in the interstices of Beirut and Algiers. Those questions – pertaining equally to the topographies of each of those cities and to the body and desire of those that inhabit them – will be concrete. Together they will be asking: where to place the camera? What length should we give the shot? Under which lighting? Towards what should we aim a microphone? In other words, which samples should we extract from that which continuously eludes us?

 *Ghassan Salhab is a Lebanese filmmaker. He wrote and directed 5 feature films: “Phantom Beirut”, “Terra Incognita”, “The Last Man”, “1958” and “The Mountain”.

 **Tariq Teguia is an Algerian filmmaker. He has directed 3 short movies, and 2 feature films: “Roma rather than you” and “Inland”.

 This master class is scheduled to take place over 2 days, Thursday 23^rd and Friday 24^th September.

Thursday 23^rd September 2010: 11 AM – 2 PM at Université Saint-Joseph (IESAV), Beryte theater, Damascus road. This master class is open for all public, but requires a prior registration.

 Friday 24^th September: 11 AM – 2 PM; This second part of the master class, much further practical and elaborated, is open for only 15 persons, selected through their letter of motivation (of 10 lines) by the two filmmakers.

 ~ Registration Deadline: Sunday 19th September 2010 for the motivation letter ~

 This master class will be given in French, free of charge.

ندوة متخصصة مع المخرجين غسان سلهب وطارق تڨية

طوبوغرافيا فيلم أو المدينة التي تنقص

 انطلاقاً من مفاهيم الحدود، والحد، وخطوط الفصل، والثغرات، ونقاط الاختفاء، والمسافة، يطرح غسان سلهب وطارق تقية الأسئلة حول ما يمكن تصويره بعد في دواخل كل من بيروت والجزائر العاصمة. تلك الأسئلة – التي تتناول طوبوغرافيا المدينتين بقدر ما تتناول أجساد سكانهما ورغباتهم – ستكون ملموسة. إذ سيُطرح السؤال، بشكل جماعي، حول أين توضع الكاميرا؟ أي مدّة تمنح للإطار المشهدي الواحد؟ تحت أية إضاءة؟ كيف يوجّه الميكروفون؟ بمعنى آخر، أي عينات تُقتطع مما يستمر في التفلّت منا؟

 الزمان: الخميس 23 والجمعة 24، 2010، عند الحادية عشرة ظهراً

Master Class with Olivier Assayas

Filmmaker Olivier Assayas will hold a Master Class on “Politics and Cinema“, based on his experience in the film Carlos.
The Master Class is moderated by Lebanese filmmaker Hady Zaccak.

Place: IESAV, USJ

 **A press screening of “Carlos” will precede the master class, and will take place on Wednesday 22^nd September in Cinema Metropolis Empire Sofil at 10 am. This screening is exclusively open for the first 50 persons registered in the master class (Film Length: 5h30’)

Reservation for this screening is mandatory. 

Master class is given in French, and is free of charge.

The Lebanese-Danish Exchange – Master Class with Arne Bro

As a part of the Documentary Training at The National Film School of Denmark (NFSD), students are sent abroad to make Documentary films entirely on their own. In 2009-2010, some Lebanese young filmmakers were chosen to make a documentary in Denmark, in an attempt from the NFSD to support the artistic development of the directors’ personal visual film language.

Six Lebanese directors will screen the result of their works during the festival on Tuesday 21 September at 6 pm and on Wednesday 22 September at 9.30 pm at Metropolis Cinema – Empire Sofil. For more info please check Ayam Beirut Al Cinema’iya program on the website www.beirutdc.org

Master Class

Mr. Arne Bro, main tutor for the Exchange Program between Denmark and the Middle East, will be giving a master class on “Film Diversity and Visual Structures”, tackling the methods, concepts and aesthetics used in films from the National film school.

Date: Saturday 18 September 2010, from 11 am till 1 pm
Place: IESAV (USJ, Damascus Road) – Beryte Theater, 1st floor underground

The Master Class will be given in English and it is free of charge!

كجزء من برنامج التدريب الوثائقيّ في المدرسة الوطنية للأفلام في الدنمارك (NFSD)، يُرسل الطلاب في بعثات إلى الخارج ليصنعوا أفلاماً وثائقية بالاتكال على أنفسهم فقط. وقد تم اختيار ستة مخرجين لبنانيين ليصنعوا أفلاماً وثائقية في الدنمارك، في محاولة من NFSD لدعم آلية التطوير الفنية للغة البصرية التي يعتمدها المخرج في فيلمه. وسيعرض نتاج أعمال هذا التعاون الثقافي خلال المهرجان .
